In 1819, Clarksburg became the first U.S. judicial district west of the Allegheny Mountains. Influenced by local leader John George Jackson, it became a hub for ambitious young lawyers, including Joseph Johnson and John S. Carlile.
The Virginia legislature founded Randolph Academy in 1787, and other schools followed, like the Northwestern Academy in 1841 and the Clarksburg Independent School District in 1867.
In the mid-1800s, Harrison County became known for its beef cattle, which were sent to markets like Baltimore. The area also produced coal and oil, with Clarksburg’s economy growing through the early 1900s. By 1920, the population had grown significantly, partly due to immigrants who came to work in the coal mines.
