Charles Washington moved to present-day Jefferson County in 1780 after inheriting land from his half-brother George Washington. He started building his home, Happy Retreat, but died before it was finished. In 1786, he planned the construction of Charles Town on 80 acres of his land, which he donated for the town square, where the courthouse now stands. Charles Town was officially incorporated in January 1787. Charles Washington is buried at Happy Retreat.
