In 1753, Andrew Culbertson moved to the New River at Crump's Bottom, near what is now Hinton. But during the French and Indian War in 1755, the settlements were destroyed. People returned around 1760, but their settlements were again destroyed during Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763. By the time of the Revolution in the 1770s, Fort Culbertson had been. Over time, people established permanent settlements along the New, Greenbrier, and Bluestone rivers. Peaceful development continued into the early 1800s.
