The first permanent settlers in this area were Jacob and Isaac LaRue in 1797. Soon, other families like the Riggses, Reynoldses, Tripletts, Smiths, and Baileys moved in. Alexander H. Creel played a key role in the county's creation. In 1843, he founded a river port village called Vaucluse near Green Run, south of what is now St. Marys. He also built a road connecting Vaucluse to the Northwestern Turnpike, 13 miles away.
