In 1780, the first European-American settlers in what is now Barbour County were Richard Talbott, his brother Cotteral, and their sister Charity. Back then, the area was still part of Monongalia County in Virginia. There were no permanent Indian settlements in the region by this time, so this minimized conflicts.
