The first European-American settler in this area was probably Adam Stroud, who arrived around 1769 near what is now Camden-on-Gauley, by Strouds Creek. Three years later, his family was killed by Indians. Few settlers arrived until the late 1700s because the area was remote. It had rough terrain and little usable land ranging from 1,000 to nearly 4,000 feet in elevation. In addition, settlers were scared of more Indian attacks.
