Wayne, originally called Trout's Hill and incorporated as Fairview in 1882, became Wayne in 1911. The southern part of the county was slow to develop, while the northern part, near Cabell County, grew quickly after the Civil War. Huntington, founded in 1871 as the terminus of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, expanded into Wayne County in 1921.
