The first European-American settlers in this area were mainly German, Swiss, Scotch-Irish, and English. Edward Dulin settled New Martinsville in 1773, and James Troy settled Reader in 1788, later selling the land to Benjamin Reader. Proctor was named after a fur trapper who lived in a cave and was killed by Indians in the late 1700s. John Wyatt settled Pine Grove in 1790. William Ice and Aiden Bales settled Grant District in 1796. Obadiah Paden from Pennsylvania settled Paden City in 1796. The Little family settled Littleton in 1797, and Henry Church settled Hundred around 1800. Peter Bartrug settled Burton in the early 1800s, while Shannon Wiley established Wileyville later in the century. Henry Talkington settled Folsom, and Aiden Bales also settled Smithfield in 1796.
