White Sulphur Springs is named after its famous mineral springs, which are said to have healed European-Americans as early as 1778. A story says that Amanda Anderson, who had rheumatism, was brought to the springs on a stretcher but was able to ride horseback after a few weeks of treatment. Her family had heard that Indians believed the strong-smelling water could heal. Soon, more people came to the springs, first camping in tents and later staying in simple cabins. Over time, White Sulphur became one of the most popular southern spas before the Civil War.
