Thomas Hannon, likely the first permanent European-American settler in the early 1790s, helped establish Cabell County, a key stop for westward settlers along the Ohio River. Before the Civil War, settlers used Indian trails, including one upgraded to the James River & Kanawha Turnpike (modern U.S. 60), reaching Barboursville in 1814. By the late 1830s, Guyandotte had become a bustling port for steamboats and a busy stagecoach stop, featuring 40 homes, five stores, a church, a school, and a large gristmill.
