Clarksburg native Laura Jackson Arnold was the younger sister of Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson and a strong Union supporter. Though once close to her brother, their relationship ended during the war due to their opposing views. Living in Beverly (Randolph County), she cared for Union and some Confederate soldiers in her home. Her marriage to Jonathan Arnold, a Confederate supporter, ended after the war in divorce. Honored by Union veterans later in life, Jackson was called the “mother" of the 5th West Virginia Cavalry by veterans of the regiment.
