In 1953, Bluefield native Toni Stone made history by becoming the first woman to play professional baseball for a previously all-male major-league team, the Indianapolis Clowns of the now-defunct Negro American League. Despite facing overwhelming sexism and adversity, including unfair treatment from both teammates and opponents, she proved her skill and determination in a sport completely dominated by men.

Her journey reflects the struggles of women in sports and racial barriers in American society. Her ability to compete at such a high level and hold her own against legendary players such as pitcher Satchel Paige make her a remarkable figure in sports history. While some viewed her signing with the Clowns as a gimmick, her performance proved that she was far more than that—she was an excellent baseball player in her own right.
