In 1941, seven Jehovah’s Witnesses were fired from the Pittsburgh Plate Glass plant in Clarksburg for refusing to join union-led flag-salute ceremonies based on religious grounds. This led to a major case that expanded religious freedom.

With help from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and a federal committee, the workers were eventually ordered to be rehired with full rights. They returned to work in 1943 after the union agreed not to harass them.
