The Louie Glass Company was started in Weston by Austrian immigrant Louie Wohinc and others to make hand-blown glass items such as stemware, tumblers, and vases. The company became well-known for quality products and sold hundreds of thousands of pieces.
After Wohinc's death in 1950, his daughter Margaret led the company for over 20 years, which was rare for a woman in the glass industry at the time. The company changed owners several times. At its peak in 1986, it employed 525 people and shipped $24 million worth of glass annually.
Despite efforts to keep it going, the business eventually closed in 2003 due to overseas competition and shrinking markets.
