West Virginia has also been home to many specialty glass manufacturers. The best known is Blenko Glass.
William John Blenko, born in England, opened his first glass factory in Milton (Cabell County) in 1921 to make stained glass. After several failed attempts in other places, he finally found success with help from his son and daughter-in-law. They started making popular decorative glass in the 1930s.
Blenko products has been featured in magazines and used in famous buildings such as the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The company is still family-run, even after facing hard times and filing for bankruptcy in 2011. It recovered and now has a special apprentice program for glass workers. Visitors can take tours of the factory and watch glass-blowing up close.
