The Hazel Atlas Glass Company was formed in 1902 and was the biggest glassmaker in the U.S. from the 1930s to the 1950s. It was known for making colorful "Depression Glass" and glass items given away with food products.
In West Virginia, Hazel Atlas had major plants in Grafton and Clarksburg. The Clarksburg factory was once the world’s largest tumbler factory and employed 1,200 workers. The company also made metal lids in Wheeling.
By 1956, it had 12 plants nationwide. After legal battles, some factories were sold, and the Clarksburg and Wheeling plants were taken over by Continental Can. The old Hazel Atlas headquarters in Wheeling is now part of the Northern West Virginia Community College.
