To get land ready for logging, workers cleared a rough path called a skidroad. Two sawyers used a large crosscut saw to cut down trees near the path, guiding the fall with a notch in the trunk. They worked with a fitter, who marked the cuts, and knot bumpers, who removed the branches. A skilled six-man crew could prepare about 225 logs a day.
