Babcock Lumber Company, founded in Pittsburgh in 1887, was a major player in West Virginia’s early timber industry and is still in business today. In the early 1900s, it was the world’s largest hardwood producer. Babcock bought a big operation in Davis, Tucker County, in 1907, which included sawmills, a box factory, a railroad, and 46,000 acres of forest. At its peak, it employed 500 men. The company also ran coal mines, farms, and other facilities in the area. After logging ended, the land became Babcock State Park.
