Architect John C. Norman designed this Craftsman-style house at 1118 Second Avenue on Charleston's West Side for himself and his family. Born in New Jersey, Norman studied architecture at Cornell University and served in World War I. Afterward, he settled in Charleston and became the second Black architect licensed in West Virginia. For 45 years, Norman's office was in the Knights of Pythias building on Washington and Dickinson streets. In addition to designing homes on the West Side, he was responsible for faculty housing at West Virginia State University, an addition to Garnet High School, and public housing at Orchard Manor. His son, John C. Norman Jr., became a noted cardiovascular surgeon.
