Samuel W. Starks, the first African American in the United States to serve as a state librarian, lived in this house at 413 Shrewsbury Street. Starks (1866-1908) was also well known outside West Virginia for his work with the Knights of Pythias. He was elected supreme chancellor, the lodge's highest national office, in 1897, and was re-elected several times. Starks's home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The house was demolished after a 2018 fire.
