Built in 1796, the Old Stone Presbyterian Church is the oldest church building in continuous use west of the Alleghenies. The Rev. Benjamin Grigsby’s dedication verse from Psalm 127:1, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it,” reflects the spiritual foundation upon which the church was established. Its educational role, particularly through Rev. John McElhenney's work in establishing Greenbrier College for Women and Greenbrier Military School, shows its impact beyond religious worship.

During the Civil War, the church was used as a hospital, and dead Confederate soldiers were buried in a trench along the south wall after the 1862 Battle of Lewisburg. After the war, 95 were reburied in a cross-shaped mound near the church.
