Crude oil production in West Virginia dropped through the late 1900s, staying between 1.5 and 2 million barrels a year by the early 2000s. But with higher demand and less global supply, production began rising sharply. By the early 2020s, the state was producing over 20 million barrels a year. Initially, this oil was being mainly produced in Wetzel, Tyler, Ritchie, and Pleasants counties, but by the 2020s, drilling had spread, notably to Doddridge, Harrison, Kanawha, Lincoln, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, and Roane counties, but particularly in the Northern Panhandle. By 2024, West Virginia was the nation's 14th-leading crude oil producer, generating about 0.3% of the national total. The state has one refinery, in Newell (Hancock County).
