Confederate General Alexander Welch Reynolds was born in Lewisburg. He graduated from West Point and served in the U.S. Army during the Seminole and Mexican wars. When the Civil War began, he joined the Confederacy, rising to brigadier general and earning the nickname "Old Gauley" after the Battle of Carnifex Ferry. After the war, he worked for the ruler of Egypt and served there until his death in 1876.
