Albert Gallatin Jenkins was born in Cabell County and studied at Marshall Academy, Jefferson College, and Harvard Law School. Before the Civil War, he was a lawyer and a U.S. congressman. When the war began, he joined the Confederacy, formed a cavalry unit, and led a number of bold raids. He fought in the battles of Scary Creek and Gettysburg and became a general. Jenkins died from wounds he received at Cloyd's Mountain, Virginia, and is buried in Huntington's Spring Hill Cemetery.
