On August 7, 1921, about 5,000 miners met in Charleston to make demands to the governor. Led by union leader Frank Keeney, they gathered at Lens Creek, about 10 miles east of Charleston that night to prepare for a march. Their goal was to end martial law in Mingo County and get rid of the anti-union mine guards and deputies in Logan and Mingo counties.
