Sidney "Sid" Hatfield (1893-1921) was the police chief of Matewan, known as a hero to union coal miners. Born near Matewan, he worked in coal mines until becoming police chief in 1919. In 1920, he supported the United Mine Workers’ campaign to organize miners. On May 19, Baldwin-Felts detectives evicted union miners from their homes, leading to the "Matewan Massacre," where seven detectives, two miners, and the mayor were killed. Hatfield survived and became a hero to miners.
In 1921, Hatfield and others were tried for the shoot-out but were acquitted. Later that year, Baldwin-Felts detectives ambushed and killed Hatfield and his friend Ed Chambers. This sparked the Miners' March, a rebellion by thousands of miners.
