The Battle of Fallen Timbers, fought near Toledo, Ohio, on August 20, 1794, ended a long period of conflict between Indians and settlers in the Ohio Valley. The region had been a battleground since the 1750s, with raids continuing even after the American Revolution.
After U.S. military defeats in 1790 and 1791, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne took command, leading an army into Ohio in 1794. He destroyed villages and defeated Indian forces at Fallen Timbers. With no British support and facing hunger, the Indians signed the Treaty of Greenville, ceding most of Ohio to the U.S. This battle and treaty ended conflicts between settlers and Indians in present-day West Virginia.
