Southern West Virginia’s modern iron making started in 1874 at Quinnimont in the New River Gorge. Investors built a coke-fueled furnace and hoped the area would become a major iron center like Pittsburgh. But they had to bring iron ore from far away in Virginia, which made it too expensive to run. The furnace kept failing and shut down for good in 1884.
