In summer 1863, Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan led a raid with 2,460 cavalry through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. This was the only time a large Confederate force entered that part of the North. After causing chaos in Ohio, Morgan's forces were trapped at Buffington Island, in the Ohio River in Jackson County, on July 19. The Union army, including the 13th West Virginia Infantry, blocked Morgan's escape, forcing many Confederates to swim across the river into West Virginia. Some were captured, while others escaped with help from local Confederate supporters. Morgan was eventually caught in Ohio a week later.
