people started raising corn more intensively and living in permanent villages. Common artifacts from this time include shell-tempered pottery, triangular arrowheads, ceramic pipes, shell tools, and bone beads. Villages were usually circular and ranged from two to five acres. There were three main groups: the Monongahela in the northern and eastern parts, villages making tempered pottery near Tygart Lake and Seneca Rocks, and the Fort Ancient people in the southern part along several rivers.
