Louis H. Manarin, who earned a B.A. from Western Maryland College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke, was Virginia state archivist, 1970-95. He is the author or editor of several books on Virginia and North Carolina history of the Civil War era, including The Wartime Papers of R. E. Lee and Henrico County: Field of Honor.
