Charles H. Daugherty, born in St. Louis and raised in Brazil, directed the West Virginia Humanities Council from 1976 to 1996. He earned a B.A. from Davidson College, North Carolina, an M.A. from Denver University, and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University. He taught at Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) from 1966 to 1976. He died in 2019.
