J. Davitt McAteer of Shepherdstown is a lawyer and an expert on mine safety and health issues. He was was assistant labor secretary for mine safety and health from 1993 to 2000, during which time he also served as acting solicitor of labor for two years. He is a graduate of WVU College of Law and Wheeling University, where he is a vice president. He led three inquiries into mine disasters in 2006 and 2010.
