Elizabeth Lawton Beury (1943-2023), a former teacher, was the great-granddaughter of Col. Joe Beury, the first coal operator on the New River. She was educated at St. Mary's Junior College, North Carolina, and at WVU, the College of Graduate Studies, and Marshall University Graduate College.
